Here’s my read. Justin likes building things for people he knows. His wife didn’t like any of the interval timers she could find, so he made her one, and five years later he rebuilt it. Most of his work now is for Cal Lutheran, the university he went to, and for the people he works alongside there.
He thinks about time more than most people. On the first day of his capstone course, he counted out a working life for his students, about 125,000 hours, and showed them how much of his own was already gone. His advice was to spend those hours building something which needs to exist in the world, and to choose something hard. He tries to take that advice himself.
He’s particular. While we built this site, he sent back screenshots because a clock hand sat a few degrees off an hour mark. Show him one option and he’ll usually ask to see five more, though once he sees the right one, he picks it and doesn’t look back. His taste runs to the Bauhaus, the Eameses, and Dieter Rams, and to plain, useful things made well.
He likes small teams. They come up often in his writing, from the small team behind MyCLU to a note to his colleagues built around Margaret Mead’s line about a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens.
He tries to assume the best about people. The video he calls arguably his all-time favorite is about reading others in a favorable light. When MyCLU launched, he asked for the same in return. If the app was slow during the first week of classes, he wrote, be kind, because his team was working on it.
He’d rather you got to know him through his work than through a description like this one, so the rest of the site is probably the better place to start.
